Most football
clubs in Nepal started as neighborhood sports
clubs. They lacked any proper organization and
were poorly run. Decades later, little has changed.
No club in Nepal has a stadium or even a proper
office for that matter! Only the Army and Police
clubs have a decent training pitch, but they are
underutilized. Most teams do not even have their
own traditional uniforms or a club badge.
Clubs rarely train on a regular basis. Players
are paid infrequently and only when there is a
tournament going on. Giving these misfit organizations
the title of "football club" might actually
be too generous.
There
are many football clubs across Nepal, but all
the recognized ones are in Kathmandu. There are
14 sides considered first division teams and the
Police and Army sides are also grouped with those clubs.
Manang
Marsyangdi and Mahendra Police have by far been
the two strongest clubs in recent years accounting
for a majority of the national team players. Tribhuvan
Army, RCT, Friends Club, Three Star Club and New
Road Team tend to fall into the category of "best
of the rest."
