Under 14s win Youth Festival
28 December 2002:
The Nepal under 14 team beat India 3 - 0 to win the
Asian Youth Festival held in Kathmandu.
Preliminary squad announced
27 December 2002:
A preliminary squad of 26 players for the SAFF Cup
was announced. The usual cast of characters made the
team, but there were a few surprises including Basanta
Gauchan, who returns to the National Team after a few
years working in Japan. The squad: Upendra Man
Singh, Chhannu Ram Chaudhary, Ritesh Thapa, Dev
Narayan Chaudhary, Rakesh Shrestha, Deepak Lama, Sagar
Thapa, Narayan Manandhar, Narottam Gautam, Sunil
Tuladhar, Rajkumar KC, Balgopal Maharjan, Kumar Thapa,
Rajan Rayamajhi, Sukra Tamang, Nabin Neupane, Ananta
Thapa, Rajesh Shahi, Ramesh Budathoki, Hari Khadka,
Basanta Thapa, Nirajan Rayamajhi, Rajkumar Shrestha,
Basanta Gauchan, Surendra Tamang and Janak Singh.
U 21's win in Bhutan
24 December 2002:
Nepal's under 21 side defeated Druk Police 2 -1
in the Jigme Wangchuk Memorial King Cup. It was
originally thought that the senior national team would
participate in the Bhutanese tournament.
Kids begin campaign with six
21 December 2002:
Nepal defeated Maldives 6 - 1 in the first match of
the Asian Youth Festival. Shishir Adhikari
netted a hat-trick for the home side. In other results
Bhutan thrashed Sri Lanka and India nipped Bangladesh.
Mahendra Gold Cup in January
21 December 2002:
All twelve "A" division clubs and several Indian sides
will be participating in the Mahendra Gold Cup
scheduled for late January.
ANFA expands with old foes
21 December 2002:
ANFA expanded its executive by adding several old foes
from the Geeta Rana ANFA including Karma Tschering
Sherpa and Kumar Thapa. They will be made vice
president and acting general secretary respectfully.
The door continues to be open for Lok Bhadhur Shahi to
reclaim his old general secretary position. Rama Singh
has been made head of the Women's Football Committee.
Police win BS Cup on penalty kicks
15 December 2002:
Substitute goalkeeper Mani Chamling helped MPC defeat
Friends Club 4 - 1 on penalty kicks in the finals of
the Budha Subba Cup.
Ananta Thapa and Narayan Manandhar scored a goal a
piece and the match was tied 1 - 1 after regulation.
Nirajan hits hattrick
14 December 2002:
Nirajan
Rayamajhi scored a hattrick, and his fourth goal in two
games to lead Friends Club to the finals of the Budha Subba Cup.
They will play MPC in the finals on Saturday.
MPC beats MMC
12 December 2002:
A goal a
piece by Ananta Thapa and Ramesh Budathoki helped MPC
defeat MMC in the Budha Subba Cup. Basanta
Thapa scored the lone goal for MMC in the 2 - 1
encounter that featured nearly half of Nepal's
national team.
Closed camp begins in Dharan
10 December 2002:
40 players
will be starting a closed camp in Dharan for the
upcoming SAFF Cup. The camp will be cut down to
30 players and move to Kathmandu after the completion
of the Budha Subba Cup. Raju Shakya and Dhruba
KC will be coaching the camp and serving as assistant
coaches to the Korean Yo Ki Hong who will take
over the training duties in late December and will
serve as Nepal's head coach for the SAFF Cup.
National Team off to Bhutan
10 December 2002:
Nepal will be
traveling to Bhutan to participate in the Jigme
Wangchuk Memorial King Cup in late December. It
will serve as a warm-up for the SAFF Cup. The
tournament will be comprised of mostly club teams from
the region, but Bangladesh's national team will be
also participating.
Afghanistan and
Kyrgyzstan in Asian Cup
8 December 2002:
Nepal was
drawn in group C with Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan for the 2004 Asian Cup
qualifying tournament. The winner of the group will move to the second
qualifying round and face South Korea, Oman and Vietnam. The top two from that
group move to the finals in China.
Ambitious plans ahead
6 December 2002:
ANFA will
organize a national league starting with district level tournaments and will
also resume the Khukuri Cup starting on January 25th. ANFA is
also looking to start a football academy in all 30 of its district
associations promptly.
SAFF Games in March 2003
6 December 2002:
The SAFF
Games will be held in Islamabad, Pakistan from
March 29 - April 7, 2003. It was originally scheduled
to be held last year.
"Lok is still my man" - Thapa
6 December 2002:
Ganesh Thapa
stated after an internal ANFA meeting yesterday that
Lok Bhadhur Shahi remains the ANFA General Secretary
as he has yet to submit his resignation. Shahi split
from the newly merged ANFA, but Ganesh Thapa seems
keen on holding on to his long time right hand man.
During the meeting, there were also talks of expanding
the ANFA executive to 29 members and there was a
debate as to whether Geeta Rana should be included in
it.
Budha Subba Cup in Dharan
6 December 2002:
Dharan
municipality will be holding the 5th Budha Subba
Gold Cup. The tournament will feature many top
Nepali club and regional teams, as well as some Indian
outfits. (Note: Footballnepal will
not be posting statistics or results of this
tournament.)
MMC lifts Jawalakhel Cup
6 December 2002:
MMC defeated
arch rivals MPC 2 - 1 to lift the Jawalakhel Cup.
The tournament was a nine-aside event that featured
the top Kathmandu clubs. Basanta Thapa tweaked a
ligament during the tournament and will be
rehabilitating his injury for the next few weeks.
Training Complex in the works
6 December 2002:
ANFA laid the foundation
to its new training complex in Lalitpur municipality
last week. This will be one of three new football
training complexes to be built in Nepal with the help
of the FIFA Goal Project Fund. A complex in Dharan is
already in the works.
The training complexes
will include a pitch, hostels, fitness center, offices
and a small stand for spectators. The contractors for
the project are supposedly to be directly paid by FIFA
to avoid any irregularities.
Afghanistan included in SAFF Cup
6 December 2002:
Afghanistan will be
participating in the 3rd SAFF Cup according to
the Bangladesh FA and the AFC.
